Macau’s number of visitor arrivals in May rose 5.2 percent year on year to 2.7 million year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.
The daily average of visitor arrivals last month stood at 87,250.
Overnight visitors accounted for 53.6 percent of all visitor arrivals in May. Overnight visitors’ average length of stay remained unchanged as 2.2 days. Some 56.9 percent of all visitors arrived by land, 33.2 percent by sea and 9.9 percent by air.
Mainlanders (1.86 million), Hongkongers (484,300) and Taiwanese (84,100) accounted for 89.8 percent of all visitor arrivals in May. While the number of mainland visitors rose 9.3 percent year on year, the number of Hong Kong and Taiwan visitor fell 2.1 percent and 5.6 percent respectively.
South Koreans continued to be Macau’s top foreign visitor segment. However, South Korean visitor arrivals dropped 10 percent year on year to 65,000 last month.
In the first five months of the year, the number of visitor arrivals rose 7.8 percent to 14.21 million.
Meanwhile, Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Helena de Senna Fernandes told reporters on Friday that Macau was able to handle more visitors.
Macau’s tourism chief made the remarks on the sidelines of a public event.
