The Macao government announced tonight that it will use the Sheraton Hotel – in Cotai – as a government-designated hotel for quarantine once again.
According to authorities, due to the increase of people needing medical observation from resumed border activity, the 298 rooms at the Hotel Pousada Marina Infante have all been filled.
Designated areas for medical observation have been created at the Sheraton Hotel, which was also previously used as a quarantine hotel together with 11 other hotels.
At present, the “special isolated area of the Sheraton Hotel” is completely closed to the shopping malls, restaurants and other hotels.
Macao experienced two COVID-19 ‘waves’. The first wave saw 10 imported cases brought over from Mainland China in January and February. The second wave began on 15 March, with the 35 cases all imported.
At the height of the second wave, 12 government-designated hotels were being used for quarantine purposes.
Macao has not confirmed a new COVID-19 case in 60 days.
All the city’s 45 novel coronavirus disease patients have been discharged.
They were all classified by the Macao Health Bureau (SSM) as imported or “connected to imported cases.” Just one of the cases was described by SSM officials as serious, and no COVID-19 death has been reported in Macao.
The Macao government has imposed strict border entry curbs for weeks but due to some new relaxed rules, Macao is now receiving more visitors.
Close to 100 per cent of people in Macao wear facemasks when out and about, observers say. Facemasks are mandatory to enter public administration buildings and casinos, as well as on public transport (public buses, taxis, light rail) and in schools.
