The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement Tuesday evening that it would possibly hoist the No. 3 storm warning signal during the day today.
The weather station hoisted the No. 1 warning signal at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the bureau’s website, a tropical depression was located about 380 kilometres south-west of Macau at 8 p.m. Tuesday. It was heading north at around 15 kilometres per hour, moving towards the southern island province of Hainan.
The statement said that the wind in Macau was expected to be stronger today, adding that more showers were expected to hit the city with squally thunderstorms at times.
The statement also said that the tropical depression was expected to move towards the western coast of Guangdong province today.
The statement said there was a “medium” possibility of hoisting the No. 3 signal today.
Macau was pummelled by mega-typhoon Hato last August, resulting in 10 fatalities, 224 injuries and damage estimated at 12.5 billion patacas.
The killer typhoon coincided with a massive storm surge that resulted in huge floods in the city’s low-lying areas.
The local garrison of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) rushed to Macau’s help. PLA soldiers, who efficiently carried out a major part of the post-typhoon cleaning-up operation, were praised as “national heroes” by local residents.
It was the first time that the garrison took action to help Macau cope with a natural disaster.
