The government will sign an authorisation allowing power utility CEM to construct and manage the city’s utility tunnels, according to a chief executive order published in the Official Gazette (BO) on Monday.
A utility tunnel is a passage built underground or above ground that carries utility lines such as electricity, steam, water supply pipes, and sewer pipes for public usage.
The order pointed out that CEM is experienced in managing and constructing utility pipes, adding that transferring this role to the company is beneficial to the city. Therefore, the government decided not to put out a public tender and instead directly authorised CEM for the job, according to the order.
According to a separate executive order published in Monday’s Official Gazette, the government has authorised Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Raimundo do Rosário to sign the respective agreement with CEM on behalf of the government. According to the agreement, the company will construct and manage the city’s new and existing utility tunnels in the future.
According to the Macau Post Daily, Monday’s announcement did not mention any financial aspects of, and timeframe for the deal.
