A “severely decomposed” carcass of a Chinese white dolphin was found off the rocky shoreline near Tam Kung Temple in Coloane on Thursday, statements from the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said on Thursday.
The Marine and Water Bureau said in the statement that it received a report Thursday afternoon about a dolphin carcass off the temple, after which it notified IAM staff, pointing out that since it was difficult to get near the rocks where the carcass was, the bureau had to send frogmen out to bring it ashore.
In a separate statement, the Municipal Affairs Bureau confirmed the carcass to be of an adult Chinese white dolphin, with a body length of 2.40 metres.
The IAM statement said that when the carcass was found, it was already badly decayed and its stomach was open due to bloating. According to the statement, since no external wounds have been found, it is believed that the dolphin had died before it was washed ashore.
The statement added that as the carcass is badly decayed it will be cremated.
The statement urged the public to call the Municipal Affairs Bureau on 2833 7676 if they see a stranded dolphin.
On Wednesday, a video showing a Chinese white dolphin swimming in the waters off the peninsula quickly went viral on social media, with netizen saying it was filmed earlier that day.
