The Health Bureau (SSM) said in a statement Thursday that it has recorded the 11th imported case of dengue fever this year.
According to the statement, the patient is a 17-year-old schoolboy who studies in a school in Toi San district and lives in Rua da Mitra – a street in the Guia Hill area between the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre and Rua do Campo.
The boy went to the city of Jiangmen in Guangdong province with his younger brother where they visited their relatives between October 1 and 2 and October 6 and 7, the statement said. Jiangmen lies about 60 kilometres north of Macau.
On October 6 when he was still in Jiangmen, the boy came down with a fever, muscle pain and a headache. He went to the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre for treatment on October 7 after returning to Macau, according to the statement.
As his symptoms persisted, the boy went to the public hospital for treatment again on Wednesday. The schoolboy had a rash on his legs yesterday, the statement said. He was diagnosed with Grade I dengue fever by the bureau’s Public Health Laboratory yesterday.
The statement said that the patient, who’s staying in the public hospital for treatment, was in a stable condition. None of his family members and classmates has shown any sign of suffering from similar symptoms to date, the statement said.
The statement also said that the bureau will send some of its officials to the areas around the patient’s home and school to eradicate mosquitoes. The bureau urged the patient’s neighbours to cooperate and take measures to get rid of mosquitoes.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus.
