With the easing of this morning’s torrential rains, Macao meteorologists have lowered all rainstorm warning signals. However, the weather is expected to remain unsettled and schools have been suspended for either a whole or a half day.
The first black rainstorm signal of the year – the highest alert in Macao’s three-tier warning system – was issued at 8:18 am by the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (known as the SMG after its Portuguese initials).
The signal was downgraded from black to red at 9:30 am and all signals were lowered by mid-morning, but not before extensive rainfall was recorded across the territory, with flooding reported in low-lying areas..
More than 100 mm of rain was recorded across 5 districts during the time the black rainstorm signal was in effect.

Weather stations at Dr Sun Yat Sen Municipal Park and Monte Forte recorded 115.2 mm and 104.8 mm of rain respectively. Measurements in Coloane recorded levels close to 80 millimetres.
A black rainstorm warning remains in effect in neighbouring Hong Kong and is expected to be in force there until 3 pm.
Other parts of the Greater Bay Area are being similarly drenched under the impact of an active monsoon and upper air disturbances.
Provincial forecasters say central and northern areas of the Pearl River Delta, as well as Shaoguan, Qingyuan, western Guangdong, and both sides of the Pearl River Estuary, “will continue to experience heavy to torrential rain” today.
