Local forecasters issued the black rainstorm alert and warned of flooding in low-lying areas this morning as heavy rain fell over Macao.
The black alert is the highest in Macao’s three-tier rainstorm warning system. When the warning is in force, members of the public should shelter in place and monitor the latest weather and flood information. Outdoor activities are suspended. Flooding and other hazards may be triggered by heavy rain, and slopes, watercourses and underground areas should be avoided. Drivers must proceed with great caution.
School authorities, parents and students should pay attention to the latest announcements from the education authority. Students who have already left for school should remain at school until it is safe for them to be collected.
Forecasters say the unsettled weather will continue through Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Hong Kong – located 60 kilometres from Macao across the Pearl River estuary – the local observatory issued its highest alert, a black rainstorm warning, at 5:50 am and urged the public to seek refuge as intense downpours pummelled the territory.
The black rainstorm warning was Hong Kong’s third since 29 July.
The heavy rain in Macao and Hong Kong is part of a weather pattern bringing considerable precipitation to Guangdong province this week.
Provincial forecasters say central and northern areas of the Pearl River Delta, as well as Shaoguan, Qingyuan, western Guangdong, and both sides of the Pearl River Estuary, “will continue to experience heavy to torrential rain” today.
