The University of Macau (UM) has formally launched its Macao Centre for Research and Development in Advanced Materials.
With financing from the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao, the facility will conduct research into materials with applications for energy, environmental protection and healthcare, and encourage collaboration between industry and academia.
At a plaque unveiling yesterday, university rector Yonghua Song said he hoped that the centre would align with the local government’s development goals and capitalise on the university’s research strengths.

Ip Kuai Lam, a member of the fund’s administrative committee, hailed the new centre as a milestone in the innovative development of the materials industry in the Macao SAR. He said it could make use of the mature research environment of UM’s Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering and promote the commercialisation of research results.
Authorities in Macao are keen to promote technology as one of four areas of economic diversification (the others being finance, healthcare and the staging of international events).
In April, the University of Macau unveiled several new master’s degree programmes to buttress research in the territory, covering fields from innovative materials to artificial intelligence and robotics.
