Macao largely escaped unscathed during yesterday’s typhoon – the first one of the year to prompt the raising of the no. 8 typhoon signal.

According to the Government Information Bureau, there were half a dozen cases of fallen trees or lampposts and just one report of injury. Only 12 people made use of the territory’s emergency shelters.

At 6:00 am, severe tropical storm Talim was 460 kilometres west of Macao and moving away from the territory. The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau says Talim made landfall at 10:00 pm last night at Zhanjiang on Guangdong’s Leizhou Peninsula.

All storm signals were cancelled at 10:30 am.

Public transport has resumed, as have Hong Kong ferry services and bus services across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, however many flights remain cancelled at Macao Airport or have been rescheduled.

Weather will remain unsettled today, with a few thunderstorms, as Macao continues to be affected by Talim’s rainbands.
