The government says it is consulting stakeholders on the city’s plans for economic diversification.
According to an official handout, consultation sessions will be held from 15 June for the Development Plan for Appropriate Economic Diversification of the Macao Special Administrative Region (2024-2028).
The initial sessions will involve local deputies at the National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; members of the Executive Council; members of the Legislative Assembly; people involved in sectors covered by the plan; and appropriate experts and academics. Public sessions will follow later.

The government says its plan sets out detailed proposals for the development of tourism and integrated leisure business; traditional Chinese medicine and healthcare; financial services; technology; and the holding of international events such as conventions and exhibitions and sports tournaments. The document also looks at how Macao’s existing traditional industries may be upgraded and enhanced.
Macao is keen to diversify its economy away from the heavy dependence on gaming and the mainland Chinese tourism market.
Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and other officials have repeatedly stressed that diversification is necessary to “improve the living conditions of the population” and guarantee stability and prosperity “in the long term”.
