Macao registers its highest daily visitor total so far this year

If the streets seemed a little crowded last Saturday, it’s because the city’s tourism sector was busy welcoming more visitors than it has seen on any other day in 2023.

Some 98,000 visitors came to Macao on Saturday 15 April, according to finance secretary Lei Wai Nong, whose remarks were cited in multiple media sources.

The number is the highest recorded on a single day this year, the official said. Addressing the Legislative Assembly, Lei added that most visitors fell into the younger age group of 18 to 35.

He said that he believed tourist volumes were now at about 60 percent of their pandemic levels, and attributed the strong recovery to the government’s ongoing promotional campaigns.

Among the most popular promotions is a ticket giveaway scheme, by which visitors arriving from Hong Kong by bus or ferry can claim a free ticket if they stay in Macao for at least a night.

An average of 87,660 visitors a day came to Macao during the recent three-day Easter holiday, prompting Macao Government Tourism Office chief Helena de Senna Fernandes to declare at the time that she was “satisfied” with the pace of recovery.

However, the influx has led to a sharp spike in the cost of hotel accommodation, with many visitors complaining about room rates and authorities promising to take steps to curb “abnormal prices”.
