The city’s second Wushu Masters Challenge, slated to take place on August 10-13, will spotlight major wushu competitions and training courses, the Sports Bureau (ID) and Wushu General Association of Macau (WGAM) said Thursday.
According to the two organisers, which co-hosted a press conference at Macau Tower, the event will mainly focus on dragon and lion dances, as well as the two wushu disciplines of taolu and sanda.
While ‘wushu’ is Putonghua for martial arts, ‘taolu’ means ‘forms’ and ‘sanda’ means ‘sparring’.
Four international and regional competitions, namely the CKF International Combat Challenge-Macau, International Taolu Competition, 4th Asian Dragon & Lion Dance Championships, and Sanda Challenger Competition, will take place at the event.
Also in the programme are taolu and sanda training courses for wushu coaches three days in a row at Tap Seac Multisports Pavilion, while the Wushu Summer Carnival will be held in both Praça da Amizade and Praça do Tap Seac throughout the four-day event.
The event’s Wushu and Lion & Dragon Dance Parade will be held on the last day of the event from Largo do Senado, past the Ruins of St Paul’s to Praça do Tap Seac.
According to The Macau Post Daily, ID President Pun Weng Kun said the budget for this year’s event was 18 million patacas, which was two million patacas less than last year’s.
Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng said that last year the city’s first-ever Wushu Masters Challenge was “widely liked” by residents and tourists alike.
