Applications are being accepted between now and 29 December for official subsidies for films and other works that either feature aspects of Macao or are being shot in the city.

According to a statement from the Fund for the Development of Culture, makers of films, documentaries, television dramas, variety programmes, music videos and commercials can apply – but animated works are not being considered.

Eligible works that have already been completed can be submitted for a grant of up to 250,000 patacas to cover distribution and screening costs. The condition is that they must contain elements of Macao – defined by the fund as “backdrops, local cuisine, landscape, urban legends, allusions, history and culture [and] personalities of Macao.”

For works that have not yet been produced, a grant of up to two million patacas is available, so long as filming takes place in Macao over not less than three days. The filming must be done by foreign crews who travel to Macao for the production. Conditions are also attached to the amount of time that Macao appears in the final cut of the work.

The aim of the subsidy, the fund says, is to “enhance the promotion of the city’s image and enhance Macao’s international reputation, boost the link between cultural creativity and tourism, as well as promote the development of Macao’s film and television industry”.

A question and answer session will be held on 28 June 28, at 10:00 am, in the auditorium of the Macao Museum of Art. Interested parties can register for the session, and find out more about the funding process, at the official website.
