Permanent residents of Macao are now eligible to apply for thousands of public sector jobs in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), according to an announcement by the Guangdong authorities cited in local media.

There are reportedly almost 4,280 public sector jobs on offer in the nine GBA municipalities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, and Zhaoqing. Fields include media, technology, education and more.

An official handout said the scheme was designed to “promote talent interaction and exchanges” in the GBA. Hong Kong permanent residents are also eligible to apply.

Hong Kong already operates a Greater Bay Area Youth Employment Scheme, which seeks to encourage the territory’s young people to look north for career development.

Educators and business figures have meanwhile been stepping up calls for greater GBA integration in terms of employment.

Last month, president of the Macau University of Science and Technology, Professor Joseph Lee, told the city’s young graduates to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by the GBA.

PricewaterhouseCoopers China managing partner James Chang recently suggested that “the flow of professionals could be a starting point” for creating greater cultural integration in the area.
