Macao is sending a delegation to the 47th WorldSkills Competition, a prestigious vocational contest taking place in Lyon, France, this September.
Delegates are set to compete in the bakery, confectionery and patisserie, restaurant service, Western cooking, and hotel reception categories, a statement from the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) announced. It noted that the institute – which will be renamed the Macao University of Tourism from 1 April – was “currently in full force” preparation for the event.
This year’s WorldSkills will see 1,500 participants from more than 65 countries and regions compete across 62 categories of skilled trade, from floristry to welding, according to the competition’s website.

Macao’s Labour Affairs Bureau is set to lead the SAR’s delegation, which will include David Charles Wiley Jr., an IFTM lecturer. Wiley has been asked to serve as the “expert lead” for the bakery segment of the competition.
Wiley first served as a WorldSkills expert at the competition’s 2019 iteration in Kazan, Russia.
WorldSkills is a biennial competition organised by the charity WorldSkills International. It aims to promote exchange between young people around the world, elevate vocational trades and encourage professional success.
