The latest round for subsidised public housing applications is now open, and more than 5,400 units – in New Urban Zone A – are available, the Housing Bureau (IH) has announced.

The application period opened on Wednesday and runs until 27 December for those who meet the government’s recently adjusted eligibility criteria.

Three types of apartments are up for grabs: 1,657 one-bedroom flats, 3,216 two-bedroom flats, and 542 three-bedroom units. The selection process tends to be fiercely competitive.

IH President Arnaldo Ernesto dos Santos has said that prices for the newly available units – which will be below market rates – won’t be revealed until the selection process is underway.

Eligibility criteria for public housing include maximum monthly income and net worth thresholds. For a single person household, these have been reset at 35,650 patacas and 1,122,200 patacas.

For Macao residents who are not eligible for public housing, but cannot afford to buy on the private market – a new so-called “sandwich class” housing law comes into force on 1 April 2024.
