Airport traffic is “recovering steadily,” according to the Macau International Airport’s operator. The operator, CAM, released a statement yesterday stating there were more than 551,000 passengers through the airport in July – a 28 percent month-on-month increase.
Aircraft movements were up 10 percent month-on-month with 129 flights taking off or landing each day on average, according to the statement.
Passenger numbers were sitting at 60 percent of July 2019’s levels, while aircraft movements were at 58 percent. Just over half of the airport’s total passenger volume was travelling on mainland China routes. Twenty-nine percent flew internationally.

The airport operator is working to expand its routes and flight frequencies over the summer period, and will continue to do so going forward, its statement noted. It said it was cooperating with the local tourism sector to promote more medium- and long-haul routes, including to Indonesia.
The aim was to boost Macao’s economic development through enabling more foreign tourists to visit the SAR.
From January to the end of June, passenger numbers at Macao’s airport hit nearly 2 million. In the same period in 2019, passenger volume was more than double that at 4.7 million.
Next year, the Macau International Airport is set to begin an expansion process that will see passenger capacity increased to 13 million per year by 2029.
