A temporary outdoor performance venue is to be built in Cotai, according to a government announcement.

The 94,000-square-metre venue will be located at the intersection of Avenida do Aeroporto and Rua de Ténis, placing it near the Grand Lisboa Palace resort and Lisboeta hotel.

The facility will have a capacity of 50,000 and, according to a Cultural Affairs Bureau statement, will “attract international-level shows” to the SAR.

Preparatory work is already underway and a public tender will take place before construction commences. The facility is scheduled to open in 2025.

A purpose-built outdoor venue has been mooted for Macao after a concert by K-pop group Seventeen at the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium in January sparked noise and traffic complaints from nearby residents and caused extensive damage to the pitch.

In February, Elsie Ao Ieong, the social affairs and culture secretary, said the SAR needed an outdoor venue suitable for at least 20,000 people.
