Oppenheimer has taken home best picture and six other Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards, according to multiple media outlets. The awards ceremony was held on 10 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Other Oscars picked up by the biopic were best director, best actor, best supporting actor, best cinematography, best film editing and best original score.
The strong showing by Oppenheimer is not unexpected given that the film had been nominated for 13 Oscars and had scooped numerous other awards in the run up to the Oscars.
Irish performer Cillian Murphy, who won best actor for his depiction of J. Robert Oppenheimer – the real-life physicist who spearheaded the Manhattan Project that led to the development of the first atomic bomb – thanked director Christopher Nolan, producer Emma Thomas, as well as the cast and crew during his speech.
He also dedicated his award “to the peacemakers everywhere,” noting that “we made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or worse, we are all living in Oppenheimer’s world.”

In a notable gaffe, actor Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer as the best picture winner without first introducing the 10 nominees.
The best actress award went to American actress Emma Stone, who starred in Poor Things, a film that also picked up Academy Awards for costume design, make-up and production design.
Barbie, which was the top box office draw of 2023, with earnings totalling US$1.4 billion, only managed to win one of eight awards for which it was nominated – best original song for Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s “What Was I Made For?”
Hayao Miyazaki, the renowned Japanese director of anime films, meanwhile won a best animated feature film Oscar for The Boy and the Heron. It was his second after earning the same prize for Spirited Away in 2003.
This award for best documentary went to the film 20 Days in Mariupol – a harrowing Ukrainian depiction of events in the city of Mariupol in 2022, during the siege by Russian forces.
