Local director Mike Ao Ieong’s debut feature-length film, I Want to be a Plastic Chair, is being screened at Macao cinemas until 17 March. The film premiered at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival last December, TDM reports.
According to Cinematheque Passion’s synopsis, the film’s protagonist – a man named Ming – is beset with existential angst. Sharing a room with his younger sibling is a nightmare, and the film follows his journey into a better living situation. However, misfortune appears to shadow his every decision.
Ao told media he believed in the importance of showcasing high-quality and independent Macao-made films to the world. He said he wanted to pique the curiosity of international audiences about the local film industry and prove that the SAR’s productions were “unique and different from ordinary commercial films.”

“I think we need the support of the whole industry to be able to do that,” he added.
Ao said he planned to screen I Want to be a Plastic Chair – which was made with funding from the Cultural Affairs Bureau in 2018 – at more film festivals in the future.
The film is on at the Emperor Cinema until Sunday, and will have screenings at Cinematheque Passion on 9, 16 and 17 March.
