The Macao Institute for Tourism Studies – commonly known by its current Portuguese initials IFTM – will be changing its name to the Macao University for Tourism Studies, according to multiple media reports.
At a legislative meeting held on 19 December, lawmaker Ella Lei Cheng I stated the name shift to Macao University for Tourism Studies would more accurately reflect the quality of instruction at IFTM, which has been rated the tenth best place in the world to study hospitality and leisure management by QR World University Rankings.
The rebranding is also part of the government’s strategy to cultivate more talent in the tourism industry and market the city’s tertiary education sector.

Lawmakers are meanwhile discussing plans to enrol more mainland Chinese and international students at IFTM.
Founded in 1995, IFTM is a public tertiary institution that provides degree programmes and instruction to students who are interested in pursuing a career in the tourism and hospitality industry.
The institution recently expanded its offerings by introducing two new postgraduate programs that will be available in the coming academic year.
