The 45th Macao Green Week commenced last Saturday in Seac Pai Van Park, featuring the grand opening of three new ecological attractions – a Pavilion of Amphibians and Reptiles, an Aviary, and the city’s first Butterfly-Friendly Garden.

This nine-day event runs until 15 March and features more than 40 nature-themed activities, including eco-tours in Hengqin, wetland and bird-watching excursions, and a “Walking and Tree Conservation Activity” at Taipa Grande Natural Park on 15 March.

A carnival at Seac Pai Van Park runs until today 9 March from 2 pm to 6 pm, featuring themed booths on wetland conservation, ancient trees, butterflies and otters, alongside games and educational exhibits.

On 12 March, China’s Arbor Day will be marked with a commemorative envelope distribution and postmark event at Senado Square. Additionally, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (known by the Portuguese initials IAM) will be giving away plants across various districts in Macao for the public to bring greenery into their homes, while the Guia Hill cable car and Hac Sá Off-Roading Track’s children’s pedal go-karts are free of charge throughout Macao Green Week.

Concurrently, three new wildlife pavilions have commenced their trial run at Seac Pai Van Park. The newly opened Pavilion of Amphibians and Reptiles spans 1,080 square metres and houses more than 40 animals from 26 species, including Asian water monitors, Burmese pythons, and various turtles. Many specimens have been rescued by IAM’s veterinary team or seized from illegal wildlife trade. The facility features six themed exhibition rooms with multimedia installations, aiming to educate visitors about conservation and the impacts of illegal wildlife trafficking.

The Aviary provides habitats for scarlet ibises, Nicobar pigeons, grey parrots and macaws, with viewing platforms at various heights allowing visitors to observe the birds’ natural behaviours.

The Butterfly-Friendly Garden, developed in collaboration with Hong Kong’s Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, features 18 specially selected plant species to support local butterfly populations throughout their life cycles.

Due to space constraints, the Pavilion of Amphibians and Reptiles requires advance bookings via the “Macao One Account” platform or the IAM website, though on-site entry may be available when capacity permits. The IAM is also offering guided tours of all three facilities, which the public can register for through the Macao One Account.

The event is co-organised by major local associations and supported by forestry and conservation bodies from Guangdong, Shenzhen, Hengqin, Suzhou, and Hong Kong.

For more information, visit the IAM website or the Macao Nature website.
