Let’s talk about the one thing that matters the most: location. It doesn’t get better than this. Located on Nanjian Road, one of the city centre’s busiest shopping destinations, The Shanghai EDITION is just a five-minute walk from the Bund, putting the city’s skyline, historic architecture and riverside action within easy reach.
What’s the crowd like? The Shanghai EDITION draws a mix of media and fashion pros, visiting creatives and entrepreneurs making deals over martinis. It’s lively without being frenetic, with a cosmopolitan edge that feels tailor-made for Shanghai.
Tell me how the hotel brings it together. You wouldn’t expect anything less than boutique perfection from the EDITION brand, let alone Ian Schrager – the legendary co-founder of New York Studio54 worked with the Marriott group to bring the property to life. Local design team Neri & Hu translated his vision into a warm, modern aesthetic, natural textures and a few clever surprises – especially the recreational corners. Who’s down for a game of pool under a hanging garden?

Sounds perfect for drinks before dinner. What about the rooms? Glad you asked. I stayed at a deluxe double room, which felt less like a hotel room and more like the downtown loft I wish I owned. Warm walnut panelling and oak floors set a serene, modern mood. A table and plush chair by the window makes an easy morning spot for coffee and emails, with views stretching from the Bund to the Pearl Tower.
Tech is seamless: wireless speakers let you create a soundtrack for your stay, and a 55-inch screen is pure comfort for when you finally crash. With a fully stocked minibar and housekeeping twice daily, the experience is designed for effortless comfort. You could call it “residential chic”.
The bathroom isn’t large, but it has all you need (with a luxury touch, of course). There’s an enclosed rainforest shower and a deep soak tub, plus a vanity and a separate toilet.

Breakfast is served at Shanghai Tavern, which offers Western staples alongside made-to-order local dishes such as xiao long bao and scallion oil noodles.

Breakfast sounds great. Worth staying for dinner? In short, yes. YONE, the hotel’s Japanese restaurant and bar under Shingo Gokan’s group, is an easy choice for dinner. It’s perfect for couples or a catch-up session with friends.
Expect modern Japanese dishes, highballs and cocktails, with rice playing a central role across the menu. The fatty tuna and wagyu claypot rice are the signatures we order without fail every time we visit, but the menu is vast and features everything from sashimi to innovative mains.
And the night doesn’t end at YONE. You don’t need to venture out into the city for a night out. A bronze spiral staircase – a recurring design element found in EDITION properties worldwide – connects the restaurant to Punch Room and above that, ROOF, an alfresco lounge with views of Pudong and the Huangpu River – an elevated place for a nightcap.
And if you need a quiet moment.
The hotel’s serene indoor pool and hot tubs offer a break from the Bund’s relentless pace.
