Macao marked the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with a raft of events while being geared up for tourists from mainland China during the National Day Golden Week holiday.

To attract tourists from mainland China during the holiday, Macao rolled out a host of promotional events, including a fireworks show which took place on Saturday, new interactive devices at the Macao Grand Prix Museum and community tours.

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has been promoting the city as a safe tourist destination on social media in mainland China, while working with businesses to offer discounts for hotels and air tickets.

On 1 October, the number of visitors totalled 37,442; on 2 October, it went down to 28,235, on 3 October it was 25,852 and yesterday, 4 October, numbers averaged at 25,000.

The daily average of visitors stood at around 30,500, which is higher than the 20,000 to 25,000 initially forecast by the authorities.

Shops, entertainment venues and restaurants have reported brisk business during the holiday, while hotels have recorded an increase in their room occupancy rates, The Macau Post Daily reported.

The figures for visitors’ arrivals during the October Golden Week are exceeding expectations and are a boost to Macao’s economy, according to the MGTO’s director, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes.
