A total of 1.21 million Chinese New Year (CNY) visitor arrivals passed through Macau’s seven border checkpoints between Chinese New Year’s Eve last Monday and Sunday, the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) announced Monday.

The record number of visitors rose by 26.6 percent from last year’s CNY 7-day holiday period. Mainlanders accounted for 74.1 percent of the total number of visitor arrivals. Their number increased by 25.6 percent.

Most visitors arrived via the Barrier Gate (601,185) and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (191,799) checkpoints. A total of 84,757 arrived via the local airport.

The huge number of visitors during the CNY holidays forced the police to implement crowd control measures on several occasions in the city centre, namely around the Ruins of St. Paul’s landmark and in the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro neighbourhood.

On average, 173,355 visitors arrived in Macau per day during the 7-day CNY period. The fourth day of the Chinese New Year last Thursday recorded the highest number of arrivals – 226,874.

The mainland’s “Golden Week” CNY holiday ended on Sunday.
