Macao’s tourism promotion up to the end of the year will essentially focus on mainland China, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said today.

Between January and June this year, 94 per cent of Macao’s visitors came from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, said the director of the MGTO who was speaking at the “Road to Recovery: Macau post COVID-19” breakfast meeting organised by the France Macau Chamber of Commerce.

“We are not in a position to look at other markets at the moment,” said Senna Fernandes, who revealed that MGTO will produce “60 tourism videos that focus on the special characteristics of SMEs in various parishes and creative industries communities”.

Senna Fernandes also said that the MGTO will “use major media and social networking platforms to show that Macao is ready to welcome visitors from all over the world with a healthy and hospitable image”.

The MGTO director also announced the main events to be held in Macao during the second half of the year will be the Macao Light Festival on the 26 September, the 34th International Music Festival on 4 October, the Macao Grand Prix on the 19 November, the International Film Festival on 3 December and the Macao International Parade on the 13 December. Regarding the Macao Grand Prix, Senna Fernandes confirmed the event will proceed but said so far the races have not been confirmed. The Fireworks display to be held on the 1st October to celebrate China National Day will be a collaboration with the Hengqin authorities and will include a drone show.

During her presentation today, the MGTO director explained that in the future the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and MGTO will promote MICE events together.

MGTO, whose activity is under Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao government Ao Ieong U, will soon be moved to the umbrella of the Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lei Wai Nong.
