The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) plans to provide free half-day tours for overnight visitors after COVID-19 visitor entry curbs have been eased, according to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) about Tuesday’s first plenary meeting of the year by the government-appointed Tourism Development Committee (CDT).
The meeting was chaired by Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U, who heads the committee. It was attended by a number of other government officials and tourism sector representatives.
According to the statement, Ao Ieong expressed the government’s gratitude for the hotel sector’s provision of guestrooms for quarantine purposes as an important factor in the government’s fight against the novel coronavirus disease.
MGTO officials announced during the closed-door meeting, according to the statement, that the government will also provide “preferential measures for transportation networks” such as airlines and ferry and cross-border bus operators as a part of its economic recovery measures for the tourism sector which has been severely affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The statement also said that MGTO officials were currently discussing with tourism sector representatives the development of post-COVID-19 local and Hengqin tours “to help stimulate the economy.”
