Macau was visited by 20.44 million people in the period from January to August, similar to the number in the same period of 2015, the region’s Statistics and Census Bureau said on Friday.

The number of visitors from mainland China (13.56 million) and Hong Kong (4.26 million) fell 0.6 per cent and 2.6 per cent, respectively, in annual terms but those from South Korea (422,400) and Taiwan (717,700) rose 12.8 per cent and 10.4 per cent, respectively, year on year.

Visitors remained in Macau for an average of 1.2 days, or an additional 0.2 days compared to the same period of last year.

In August, 2.88 million visitors entered Macau, a figure that represents a 3.1 per cent increase in monthly terms (compared to July 2016) and a fall of 5.0 per cent in annual terms (compared to August 2015).

In that month 1.98 million people visited Macau from mainland China or a decrease of 5 per cent over the figure recorded in August 2015.
