Macau hotel guests rise 6.8 pct to 8 million in Jan-July

Macau’s hotel sector recorded 8.09 million guests in the first seven months of the year, a year-on-year growth of 6.8 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Thursday.

Macau’s hotel sector recorded 8.09 million guests in the first seven months of the year, a year-on-year growth of 6.8 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Thursday.

The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses rose by 3.2 percentage points to 88.7 percent, while visitors’ average length of stay increased by 0.1 night year on year to 1.5 nights.

The number of hotels and guesthouses stood at 116 at the end of July, an increase of 9 establishments year on year.

The number of guestrooms grew by 8 percent year on year to 39,000, of which 5-star hotel rooms increased by 11.1 percent to 24,000, accounting for 61.9 percent of the total.

The number of guests of hotels and guesthouses rose by 1.1 percent year on year to 1.22 million last month.

Mainlanders accounted for 68.7 percent of all guests in July.

The number of guests from the mainland (841,000) increased by 6.2 percent, while those from Hong Kong (152,000) and Taiwan (48,000 percent) dropped by 8 percent and 3.9 percent respectively.

While South Koreans continued to be the top foreign guest segment, at 38,000 in July, their number dropped significantly by 21.8 percent.

Meanwhile, due to the summer holidays, visitors on package tours in July increased by 14 percent from the previous month to 771,000 last year, yet down by 3.3 percent year on year.

While mainlanders accounted for 79.3 percent of all package tour visitors, their number fell 7.5 percent year on year. The number of Taiwanese (63,000) and South Korean (49,000) package tour visitors leapt by 59.4 percent and 30.6 percent respectively.

In the first seven months, visitors on package tourists rose 10.7 percent year on year to 5.04 million.
