Macau, China, 14 Jul – Macau’s 89 hotels and boarding houses recorded 3.19 million hotel guests in the first five months of this year, an increase of 20.3 percent on the same period of last year, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) announced Tuesday.

The number of guests in May rose 46.3 percent year-on-year to 650,849. However, the number dropped two percent month-to-month.

Mainlanders and Hongkongers accounted for 51.9 percent and 19.4 percent of all guests, respectively.

The average occupancy rate soared 18.6 percentage points year-on-year to 77.9 percent in May. Three-star had the highest average occupancy rate, at 81.2 percent.

However, guests’ average length of stay dropped by 0.02 night to 1.5 nights.

At the end of May, the total number of guestrooms increased by 11.4 percent year-on-year to 19,573 rooms.

Hotel and boarding house guests accounted for 31 percent of all visitor arrivals in May.

The average daily number of hotel and boarding house guests in May stood at 20,995, according to The Macau Post Daily.

In May, total visitor arrivals surged 31.8 percent year-on-year to 2.09 million. The number of visitors a year earlier was adversely affected by the swine flu scare.

The number of package-tour visitor arrivals leaped 132.9 percent year-on-year to 569,803 in May. Mainlanders accounted for 74 percent of all package-tour visitors.

According to The Macau Post Daily a total of 11,375 package-tour visitors from India arrived in May.

In the first five months of this year, package-tour visitor arrivals rose 23.2 percent year-on-year to 2.57 million, accounting for 24.9 percent of all arrivals.
