The Cultural Affairs Bureau announced Monday the cancellation of the “2020 Macao Countdown Event” in order to give priority to public health in the city.

A statement from the bureau also said: “The Fireworks Display for New Year’s Eve supported by the Macao Government Tourism Office will also be cancelled.”

The decision to cancel the countdown was taken because “the event draws a large number of people in the surrounding performance area close to the early morning hours, and such high density may risk having crowd gathering.”

The Countdown events in Macao and Taipa features many local and foreign performers, involving nearly 30,000 participants every year.

According to the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the decision was taken after a careful evaluation of the impact of the novel coronavirus pneumonia during big crowds.
