Macau recorded 21,810 visitor arrivals from Thailand last month, a year-on-year growth of 81 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Tuesday.

However, the total number of visitors in January dropped 6.1 percent to 2.31 million.

The decline could be explained by the fact that last year’s Chinese New Year fell in January, while this year it was in February, The Macau Post Daily pointed out.

The number of mainland visitors dropped 1.4 percent year-on-year to 1.47 million.

A total of 616,066 mainlanders travelled to Macau under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS).

Visitor arrivals from Hong Kong (509,826), Taiwan (76,841) and Japan (26,904) decreased by 20.1 percent, 10.2 percent and 15 percent, respectively.

The number of South Korean visitors rose 14.1 percent to 52,668.

A total of 14,630 visitors from the US, 12,203 from Australia, 5,992 from Canada and 4,317 from the UK visited Macau last month – all of them down from a year earlier.

Visitors’ average length of stay stood at one day in January.(macaunews)
