Macau’s 99 hotels and guesthouses recorded 4.33 million guests in the first five months of this year, an increase of 16.9 percent on the same period of last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said Monday.

The growth rate of hotel guests largely outpaced the three percent increase in visitor arrivals to 11.8 million in the January-May period.

The number of hotel guests accounted for 36.6 percent of all visitor arrivals in the first five months.

The hospitality industry’s number of guestrooms rose 16.4 percent year-on-year to 28,065 at the end of May. Guestrooms of 5-star hotels accounted for two thirds of the total number.

In May, 907,831 guests checked into local hotels and guesthouses, up 20.3 percent year-on-year. The number of guests staying in 5-star hotels rose 43.9 percent to 562,281, or nearly 62 percent of all guests.

In May, guests stayed for an average of just 1.3 nights, a slight decrease from the same month of last year.

Mainlanders and Hongkongers accounted for 59.2 percent and 16 percent of all guests respectively.

The average occupancy rate stood at 77.6 percent in May, down from 78.1 percent a year earlier.

According to a separate DSEC statement, Macau’s tourist price index (TPI) grew 6.08 percent year-on-year in the second quarter.

The bureau attributed the increase namely to higher hotel room rates and the rising cost of eating out.(macaunews)
