Melco hosted the Simulation Racing Grand Prix (SRGP) for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) esports players to challenge the Guia Circuit virtually on Friday at the Dancing Water Theatre of City of Dreams (COD).

Simulation racing is known as “sim racing” in the esports jargon.

According to a statement by Melco Resorts and Entertainment, the event, which on 19 December, was supported by the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture, Macao Sports Bureau (ID) and Guangdong Sport Bureau. Last night was live-streamed on CCTV and iQiyi Sports new media platforms.

Melco owns the COD complex in Cotai.

The statement noted that the race was launched in mid-October with an online tournament and satellite tournaments in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Jiangmen, Zhuhai and Macao. More than 15,000 online and offline participants joined the Zhuhai tournament. Live-streaming during the tournaments was broadcast to national audiences with close to 60 million views.

The statement also said that the top players, comprising two players from Hong Kong and a total of 18 professional simulation racing finalists competed in the Grand Final of the virtual race.

The statement noted that the winner of the race was crowned the Grand Final Champion and received the “Melco Cup” last night.

The statement said that Melco continued to support the government on economic diversification and it hoped that the event could add a new element to the city’s tourism industry. The statement described esports as one of the most up-and-coming sporting events, adding that on Wednesday, the Asian Games officially named esports as one of the listed medal programmes in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

The results of last night’s finals will be published by the Macau Post Daily on Wednesday.
