Staff at Seac Pai Van Park are overjoyed following the birth of a male golden snub-nosed monkey last Tuesday.
The infant, who has yet to be named, is in stable condition and in the care of his mother. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM)’s animal care and veterinary team will continue to monitor the physical condition of both the mother and her infant, and has also reinforced health observation of them both to ensure their good physical and mental condition.
The team also adjusted the mother monkey’s diet and increased the food portions to enable sufficient nutrition for feeding and caring for the infant, as well as to meet the mother’s needs during the lactation period.
Staff reported that the infant’s elder brother Lian Zi, who has just turned two, “has been very curious and interested in the baby monkey”, adding that he has been trying to interact with his younger brother.
The monkeys are currently housed in the Pavilion of Rare Animals of Seac Pai Van Park. Staff reminded the public to keep quiet when visiting their enclosure to avoid affecting the animals.
There are now four golden snub-nosed monkeys in the park. A pair of adult monkeys were sent to Macao from the mainland after the IAM signed a cooperation agreement with the Qinhuangdao Wildlife Rescue Centre in Hebei in 2017.
The bureau will return the four monkeys to the mainland in batches to enable them to continue to be part of the authorities’ conservation and breeding programme, The Macau Post Daily reported.
