Central People’s Government Liaison Office Director Fu Ziying quoted Mao Zedong on Monday during a visit to Yuet Wah College, telling pupils that “the world is yours and ours, but in the final analysis it is yours.”

Fu added that the school’s “young people are full of vigour … like the sun at eight or nine o’clock in the morning; hope rests on you.”

Fu, the highest-ranking central government official posted to Macao, also told the pupils that “the future of China is yours, the future of the world is yours.”

According to a statement by the office, Fu and his delegation witnessed the school’s solemn national flag-raising ceremony on its campus, attended by more than 800 teachers and pupils from its junior high school section during the visit on Monday morning.

The statement pointed out that the teachers, pupils and Liaison Office representatives all sang the national anthem together.

Fu sent a special message to the teachers and pupils: “Love the motherland and love the world.” He quoted President Xi Jinping as saying that “love is the soul of education.”

In his speech, Fu also urged pupils to remember history and face the future. He pointed out that Yuet Wah College was founded in Guangzhou in 1925.

“We must keep in mind the Chinese people’s hard pursuit of prosperity and strength, and contribute to the future to give back to society, build Macao, and serve the nation,” Fu said.

Yuet Wah College is one of the many local schools run by the Macao Catholic diocese.
