The government will translate patriotic education textbooks into English and Portuguese, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U told lawmakers on Wednesday.

Ao Ieong said the English- and Portuguese-language textbooks would be handed to Macao’s international schools, as well as the private Portuguese School of Macau (EPM).

The policy secretary made the announcement in response to a question by lawmaker Zheng Anting during a Q&A session in the legislature’s hemicycle about her portfolio’s policy guidelines for next year.

In his question, Zheng said that local pupils enrolled in Macao’s international schools needed to be provided patriotic education.

The Ministry of Education in Beijing announced in October that it was preparing a number of patriotic education textbooks for Macao’s primary and secondary schools, covering areas such as the nation’s history, ethics and citizenship.
