EDP Portugal (Energias de Portugal), which is partly owned by China Three Gorges, has opened the largest solar park in the state of São Paulo and fifth largest in Brazil.

The mega photovoltaic complex, with an installed capacity of 252 MW, is based in São Paulo and is so far the largest ever developed, built and operated by the Lisbon-based company.

“The Pereira Barreto project represents the company’s commitment to diversification in photovoltaic solar energy. Brazil is a key market for the materialisation of our business plan. We even expect to inaugurate, in the medium and long term, other similar projects in the region,” said Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade, CEO of EDP and EDP Renewables.

Miguel d’Andrade said that the solar complex comprises five parks and will have an annual production capacity of 547,000 MWh, distributed by nearly 600,000 photovoltaic panels. The energy generated annually will be enough to supply a city with over 750,000 inhabitants.

The photovoltaic park has contributed to the creation of 1,500 jobs, more than half (56 per cent) at a local level.
