Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee led a delegation to Macau today, on his first visit here since the resumption of normal travel between the two SARs.

Lee held talks with Macau’s top official, Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng. The Hong Kong government says the purpose of the visit was to deepen “Hong Kong’s co-operation with Macao, with a view to generating stronger impetus to the growth of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), including both SARs, and making greater contribution to national development.”

Accompanying Lee were Cheuk Wing-hing, Hong Kong’s deputy chief secretary, and the territory’s culture and transport secretaries.

While in Macao, John Lee was accompanied by Wong Sio Chak, the security secretary, on a tour of the city’s convention and exhibition facilities. According to a Macao government statement, Lee was also curious to learn more about the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

Lee’s visit to Macao follows a trip to Hong Kong by Ho last week, during which Macao’s leader held a meeting with Lee and visited the Hong Kong Science Park and the Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development.

During last week’s meeting, Ho said the two cities should strengthen cooperation in areas such as scientific and technological innovation, tourism, and finance, among others.

Lee has embarked on a series of visits to GBA cities as the area pushes for greater integration. Last week, he visited Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Hong Kong media reported.
