The office of Secretary of Social Affairs and Culture Cheong U said in a statement Thiursday that the University of Macau (UM) has almost completed the move to its new campus on Hengqin Island and the government has decided that the old campus in Taipa will “basically” be used for tertiary education.

The office said the government had agreed that the university will keep some of its facilities on the Taipa campus such as its library which will be renamed the “UM Urban Centre”, Macau Research Centre and its Continuous Education Centre, according to the statement, adding that other possible alternatives for the old campus included allowing the Macau Sports Development Board (IDM) to take over the sports pavilion that is situated on the site.

The office also said that that the government would first consider the development of public tertiary education institutions when it plans the future use of the UM old campus.

A recently-formed ad-hoc group, which is concerned about the use of the old campus, urged the government to consult the public on what to do with it.

The private City University of Macau and public Macau Polytechnic Institute (IPM) and Macau Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) have expressed interest in the hilly campus.(macaunews/macaupost)
