National People’s Congress (NPC) Chairman Zhang Dejiang Tuesday urged local lawmakers to continue supervising the government and keep up with its legislative work, Legislative Assembly President Ho Iat Seng said.

According to Ho, Zhang made the remarks in a speech to the citys lawmakers during his visit to the Legislative Assembly building in Nam Van on the second day of a three-day inspection visit to Macau that ended today.

Ho briefed reporters about Zhangs speech to lawmakers after the visit as local media were not allowed to attend the meeting. Zhang, the nations top lawmaker, was the first state leader to visit the local legislature.

According to Ho, Zhang raised three points expected from the legislature, namely to promote the strengthening of the local legal system, to strictly adhere to the countrys Constitution and Macau Basic Law, and to uphold the spirit of loving the country and Macau, such as rejecting unlawful behaviour in the legislative chamber including displaying banners and using violence.

The chairman granted recognition to the legislatures work after the return to the motherland [in 1999], especially for passing Article 23 of the Basic Law to protect state security, said Ho quoted today by Macau Post Daily.
Ho, together with Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On and Legislative Assembly Vice President Lam Heong Sang, accompanied Zhang throughout the visit.
