The prime minister of São Tomé and Príncipe is due to travel to the People’s Republic of China on April 11 for a visit “during which cooperation agreements will be signed in the economic, cultural and scientific fields,” according to a statement issued on Thursday after a cabinet meeting.

The statement added that later this month the government is due to present an amending budget to parliament preparation of which, “should start immediately.”

The Government points out in a statement that the amending budget is part of “additional measures” aimed at “correcting currently registered deficits” and complying with the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which on Tuesday concluded a new assessment programme with São Tomé and Príncipe.

The parliament of São Tomé and Príncipe at the end of January approved the State Budget and the Major Planning Options for 2017 with 33 votes in favour of the parliamentary majority that supports the government and 25 votes against by the 25 members of the opposition.

The 2017 state budget includes expenses of just over US$142 million, which represents an increase of 23.4% compared to the budgetary execution estimate by December 2016.
