People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Macau Garrison Commander Xu Liangcai pointed out on Thursday that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the stationing of a garrison of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in Macau, adding that the garrison has “unswervingly” upheld the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, and strictly adhered to the Macau Basic Law and the Law of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on Garrisoning the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), and “unswervingly” protected Macau’s prosperity and stability.

Xu made the remarks in a speech during a reception to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the PLA, at the PLA garrison barracks in Zape.

Xu also stressed that the PLA garrison has above all considered the national interest, always following the current social system of Macau and also respecting and supporting the local government, and regarding Macau compatriots as family.

Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On said that the PLA garrison was an important force for “safeguarding” the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, as well as the “cornerstone” for protecting Macau’s stability and prosperity.

‘Enormous contribution’

Chui expressed his gratitude to the PLA garrison’s diligence and its “enormous contribution” made to the local society’s development, as well as its high sense of responsibility and support to the local government, as reflected in its post-disaster relief work.

Chui pointed out that as this year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the PRC and the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland, both the nation and Macau are entering a “brand-new historical phase”.

Chui further pointed out that in facing the “new historical opportunity”, the local government would unite all social sectors with passion and get on to the “high-speed train” of the nation’s development by actively participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), as well as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) development, apart from contributing to the “One Country, Two Systems” principle by giving full play to Macau’s strengths to serve the nation’s needs.

According to the Macau Post Daily, Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau Director Fu Ziying, Foreign Ministry Commissioner in Macau Shen Beili, National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Vice Chairman Edmund Ho Hau Wah, Legislative Assembly (AL) President Kou Hoi In, Macau Garrison Political Commissar Sun Wenju and other senior local officials and community leaders attended the reception. According to a statement by the garrison, about 300 guests were in attendance.
