Macau, China, 17 Jul – The next Macau’s chief executive Fernando Chui Sai On said Thursday he would consider issuing “shopping vouchers” to encourage consumer spending during the economic slowdown, if he was elected to Macau ‘s top job.
According to The Macau Post Daily, Chui Sai On made the remark during a meeting with some 200 representatives of the tourism and restaurant industries at the World Trade Centre Macau.
A representative of the Macau Association of Retailers and Tourism Services told Chui Sai On that due to the global financial crisis and the swine flu are, the sector’s income had dropped at least 20 percent so far this year compared with the same period a year ago.
The future chief executive said the proposed “shopping vouchers” were aimed at boosting consumer spending and helping small- and medium-sized enterprises during the economic trough could be used at designated eateries and retail shops.
Chui Sai On also said that he would further strengthen tourism promotion cooperation with Guangdong and Hong Kong .
Chui’s confirmation by a 300-member committee is due to take place on July 26.
He is set to start his new job on December 20.
Chui Sai On resigned as secretary for social affairs and culture in order to be able to run for chief executive.
