The commander of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Macau Garrison, Liao Zhengrong, has been transferred to Guangzhou, according to an order issued by President Xi Jinping, also chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), the army’s local garrison said in a statement on Friday.
The statement said that Liao would be serving as deputy commander of the Guangzhou Military Region, and that his position in Macau was temporarily vacant.
Liao took up the post of Macau Garrison commander in January. Liao was the vice-commander of the PLA garrison in Hong Kong before his posting to Macau.
According to the statement, Liao paid a visit to Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee Vice Chairman Edmund Ho Hau Wah before his departure.
The statement did not say when Liao left Macau and when his meetings with Chui and Ho took place.
The statement said that Chui acknowledged Liao’s support and contribution to Macau when he headed the local garrison, pointing out due to its strong support to Macau, the local garrison provided assistance to the special administrative region when the local authorities launched preparations for Typhoon Mangkhut.
Typhoon Mangkut battered the city last month, resulting in the orderly evacuation of thousands of residents living in flood-prone neighbourhods and the temporary closure of Macau’s border checkpoints and casinos.
