The Macau Journalists Association released a statement Wednesday to denounce the stabbing of former Ming Pao chief editor Kevin Lau Chun-to in Hong Kong .

The statement said that the association strongly condemned the “barbaric” action, adding that such incidents should not take place in a place governed by the rule of law.

It claimed that freedom of the press in Hong Kong was in decline as media professionals often get stifled or lose their jobs, while their lives were often in danger simply because of their pursuit of the truth.

The statement also alleged that a “dark force” was in the process of creating “white terror” in Hong Kong. It did not elaborate on the allegation.

The assocation demanded that the Hong Kong government act to protect the city’s journalists and find the culprits as soon as possible, while it also urged all journalists working in Chinese society to look after each other in the face of adversity and preserve press freedom in both Hong Kong and Macau instead of kowtowing to what it called the “dark force”.(macaunews)
