Macao’s Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng described 2023 as an “unforgettable and productive year” in his New Year message to the city, and indicated his expectations for 2024 – a year boasting two significant anniversaries.

“I would like to extend my New Year blessings to all Macao residents, and friends at home and abroad who care about and support the development of Macao,” he began.

Ho commended the city for working together to accelerate Macao’s post-pandemic economic recovery and secure long-term prosperity. “Over the past year, we have kept pace with the times and acted pragmatically,” he said.

He went on to highlight progress made in 2023, in areas such as law reform and economic diversification, expressing his gratitude to “all contributors … from all walks of life!”

The Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng also pointed out that 2024 will see two major milestones: the People’s Republic of China’s 75th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of Macao’s handover to China.

These would be marked with “a series of lively major festive celebrations” he said.

Ho wound up by noting that both “new opportunities and challenges will coexist.” But he also assured residents that with hard work and strong leadership, “a better tomorrow” was achievable.
