The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau yesterday praised its late director Zheng Xiaosong for his honesty and fruitful work.
The office gave the praise in a statement about its former director who died in Macau on October 20, aged 59.
According to a brief statement by the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HMO) on October 21, Zheng fell to his death – “because he was suffering from depression” – from the building where he lived.
Yesterday’s statement by the Liaison Office pointed out that Zheng was an “outstanding” member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the party’s 19th Central Committee.
The statement pointed out that Zheng worked in various fields and places such as foreign affairs and finance, in Fujian, Hong Kong and Macau.
“He had a strong sense of professionalism and responsibility, was devoted to his duties, dared to take responsibility, adhered to principles, was clean and honest, and did a lot of fruitful work in different positions,” the statement said.
The statement underlined that after his posting to Macau in September 2017, Zheng made positive contributions to the cause of the “One Country, Two Systems’ principle, actively planned the long-term development of Macau and earnestly implemented the Macau Basic Law.
The statement said Zheng worked selflessly despite battling illness, adding that “his unfortunate death has deeply saddened” his comrades at the Liaison Office.
According to the statement, many local and national entities and individuals, including the CPC leadership and Macau officials, and other relevant parties expressed their deep condolences over his death and expressed cordial condolences to his bereaved family.
The statement said that Zheng’s mortal remains will be cremated in the near future and his ashes will be buried at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing.
The graveyard is Beijing’s main resting place for the nation’s highest-ranking revolutionary heroes, senior government officials and individuals deemed of major importance due to their contributions to society.
The statement also pointed out that people from all walks of live have expressed their condolences over Zheng’s death. According to the statement, letters of sympathy can still be sent to the Liaison Office until Wednesday.
The director of the Liaison Office is the highest-ranking central government official posted to Macau. Zheng’s successor is slated to be appointed by the central government in due course.
Several civic leaders have told The Macau Post Daily that they remember Zheng as a hard-working official who was keenly interested in local affairs and ready to listen to a wide range of opinions from the local community.
