The Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau and Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On issued separate statements on a Sunday to congratulate Ho Iat Seng on winning the chief executive election with 98 per cent of the votes cast.
According to the Liaison Office’s statement, the current government and the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Chief Executive Election smoothly and successfully organised on Sunday’s election, demonstrating the principles of fairness, justice and openness.
“The community and the majority of Macau citizens resolutely protect the Macau Basic Law and the [Chief Executive] Election Law, and actively participated in the chief executive election as well as exercised their democratic rights in accordance with the law, which thoroughly shows that they have expectations for the new Chief Executive and the new government’s policy implementation,” the statement said, adding that all this displayed Macau citizens’ good tradition of “loving the country and loving Macau”, and cooperating to seek development.
Moreover, also this also showed the successful practice of the full implementation of the “One country, Two systems” principle, “Macau people governing Macau”, and Macau’s “high degree of autonomy”, the statement underlined.
‘Glorious new era’
The Liaison Office also said in the statement it believed that Ho will definitely unite and lead the new government and local citizens in entering a glorious new era, adding that the office will continue to perform its duties assigned by the central government and fully support the Macau government and the chief executive to govern according to law.
‘Smooth transition’
Meanwhile, Chui said in his statement that the incumbent government team would support Ho in forming his own team and ensure a smooth transition, adding that he would submit a report to the central government on the election result and propose the appointment of Ho as the next chief executive after the Court of Final Appeal (TUI) officially confirms Sunday’s election result.
Chui’s statement said he was confident that Ho met the requirements for the position of chief executive as defined by the central government, such as patriotism, the ability to maintain the central government’s trust, the capability to govern, and the special administrative region’s support.
According to the Macau Post Daily, Chui said that he believed Ho would be able to unite Macau in advancing the steady implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle and usher in the next phase of the city’s development.
The statement also said that Sunday’s chief executive election had been carried out smoothly and in a lawful manner, which illustrated the full implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” principle, “Macau people governing Macau”, and the city’s enjoyment of a high degree of autonomy.
